Xavier Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: Get fit and have fun.

Okay, here’s my attempt at a blog post, following all your instructions:

Xavier Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: Get fit and have fun.

So, I finally took the plunge and started Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) classes at Xavier’s gym. I’ve been wanting to do this for, like, forever, and it’s even crazier than I expected. Figured I’d share my experience for anyone else thinking about trying it out.

Getting Started

First thing’s first, finding the place was a bit of a mission. It’s tucked away, not super obvious from the street. But once I walked in, the vibe was instantly cool. Everyone was super welcoming, which was a relief, because I was definitely nervous.

Before I could even think about grappling, I had to get the gear. Bought a gi (the traditional uniform) – it felt kinda weird at first, like wearing a heavy bathrobe. But hey, when in Rome, right?

The First Class (aka Getting My Butt Kicked)

My first class was…intense. We started with a warm-up that nearly killed me. Lots of running, jumping, and some weird animal movements I’d never seen before. I was already sweating buckets before we even got to the actual BJJ stuff.

Then came the techniques. The instructor, Xavier, is a beast. He showed us some basic moves, like how to escape from being mounted and a couple of simple submissions. Even though he explained everything really clearly, my body just wouldn’t cooperate. It was like my brain knew what to do, but my limbs were having none of it.

  • escape from mount.
  • basic control.

Next up: sparring. Or as I like to call it, “getting smashed repeatedly.” I got paired up with a guy who was way more experienced than me (obviously). He took me down, passed my guard, and submitted me in about 30 seconds. I tapped out so fast, I think I surprised myself.

This happened, like, five more times. Each time with a different person. Each time ending with me tapping out. It was humbling, to say the least.

The Aftermath

After class, I was exhausted, sore, and covered in bruises. But, surprisingly, I also felt amazing. I’d learned a ton, pushed myself physically, and even managed to laugh at myself a few times. It was the good kind of pain, that feeling when you’re really working to learn something new.

I’ve been going to classes for a few weeks now, and I’m still getting my butt kicked regularly. But I’m also starting to see some improvement. I can last a little longer in sparring, and I’m even starting to understand some of the more complicated techniques. It’s a slow process, but I’m hooked.

i still can escape from mount, and control opponent.

So, yeah, that’s my BJJ journey so far. It’s tough, it’s challenging, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. If you’re thinking about trying it, I say go for it! Just be prepared to get humbled… a lot.
