So, I bumped into the name Eddie Gregory recently. Someone mentioned it, maybe in an old forum thread or something, talking about bass players. Got me curious, you know? I like finding those players who maybe aren’t household names but were solid session guys or had a unique thing going on.

Starting the Dig
First thing I did was just start listening. Pulled up some tracks where people said he played. It wasn’t always super obvious, sometimes the bass just sits right in the mix, doesn’t jump out but you’d miss it if it was gone. That’s kind of the stuff I appreciate. Not too flashy, just doing the job right.
I spent a good evening just jumping between songs. Some funk stuff, some smoother tracks. It’s interesting trying to pick out a player’s style when they’re playing for different artists. You gotta listen close.
Trying to Catch the Groove
Then there was this one particular bass line. Can’t even remember the song title now, typical me. But it had this specific little rhythmic thing, a ghost note maybe, or just the timing was slick. I thought, “Okay, I gotta try and figure this out.”
- Grabbed my bass, hadn’t played it seriously in a bit.
- Plugged into my little practice amp.
- Put the track on loop. Like, annoyingly on loop.
Man, it’s humbling sometimes. You hear something that sounds simple, but trying to get your fingers to do it exactly right? That’s the hard part. I was there for probably an hour, just playing the same few bars over and over. Rewind, listen, try again. My fingers started getting sore.
Getting there, slowly. It wasn’t perfect, not by a long shot. But I started to feel the pocket of it, where the notes sit against the drums. That’s the key, right? The feel. It’s not just hitting the right notes, it’s when you hit them.

What I Reckon Now
So, yeah. My little adventure trying to get into Eddie Gregory’s playing. Didn’t become a master overnight, obviously. But it was a good exercise. Made me listen differently for a bit. You go through phases, sometimes you explore new stuff, sometimes you stick with the familiar. This was one of those exploring days.
Still haven’t completely nailed that bass line, mind you. It’s written down somewhere in my messy notes pile. Maybe I’ll pull it out again next week. Or maybe I’ll get distracted by some other shiny musical thing. That’s usually how it goes around here.
