When is a prueba de parafina used? Learn about its role in forensic investigations.

Okay, so I decided to mess around with some paraffin wax today, just to see how it behaves. Been meaning to try this for a while.

Getting Things Ready

First thing, I had to gather my bits and pieces. Needed the paraffin, obviously. Had a block of it sitting in the garage.

  • Paraffin wax block
  • An old metal can (like a clean food can)
  • A saucepan slightly bigger than the can
  • Water
  • Something to heat it on, just used my stove
  • A small object to make an impression – found an old key
  • Some newspaper to protect the counter, ’cause I make messes

Safety first, right? Well, mostly just didn’t want wax everywhere. Put down the newspaper. Then I filled the saucepan with a bit of water, maybe an inch or two deep.

Melting the Wax

Broke off a few chunks of the paraffin wax. Didn’t need a huge amount. Dropped them into the empty, clean metal can. Then, I carefully placed the can into the saucepan with the water. Like a makeshift double boiler, you know? Keeps the wax from getting scorched.

Put the whole setup on the stove over low heat. Didn’t want to rush it. Watched it for a bit. The wax started to soften up around the edges, then slowly turned into a clear liquid. Took maybe 10 minutes? Stirred it gently once or twice with an old wooden skewer I found. Made sure no water splashed into the wax can.

Doing the Test Bit

Once it was all melted and looking nice and clear, I turned off the heat. Carefully lifted the can out of the water bath – used an oven mitt for that, it was hot. Placed it on the newspaper.

I let it cool just a tiny bit, maybe thirty seconds? Didn’t want it piping hot, but still needed it liquid. Then I poured a small puddle of the melted wax onto another piece of newspaper. Quickly, before it started to set too much, I pressed the old key into the puddle. Held it there for maybe 10 seconds.

Lifted the key straight up and out. Left a pretty neat little impression of the key shape in the wax as it cooled down.

Final Thoughts

The wax hardened up pretty fast once it was out of the heat. The impression was quite clear, actually. Showed the key’s teeth and everything. It’s a simple thing, yeah, but satisfying to just do it yourself and see it work.

Clean up wasn’t too bad. Let the wax in the can harden completely, then it mostly just popped out. The saucepan just had water in it. Overall, a straightforward little experiment. Worked just like I thought it would. Good stuff.
