Getting Hands-On After Hearing About Colin Scott
So, I heard the name Colin Scott tossed around somewhere. Think it was in an article I glanced at, something about whisky blending, you know, the fancy stuff like Chivas. It got me thinking. I wasn’t doing much that weekend, just kicking around the house.

I looked over at the cabinet. Had a couple of leftover bottles of pretty basic stuff. Nothing fancy, mind you. Just your standard supermarket buys. And I thought, “How hard can it be, really?” People mix drinks all the time. Blending sounds like a grander version of that. So, I decided to give it a go myself. A little home experiment.
My Blending Adventure Begins
First, I grabbed a few clean glasses. Poured a bit from one bottle into a glass. Then a splash from another bottle into the same glass. I didn’t really measure precisely, just eyeballed it. Swirled it around a bit, trying to look like I knew what I was doing. The colours mixed, looked sort of okay.
Then I took a sniff. Hmm. Didn’t smell like anything special. Maybe even a bit harsh. Okay, maybe it needed something else? I tried another combination in a different glass. This time I added a tiny drop of water, heard that’s something people do.
- Got the glasses ready.
- Poured some whisky from bottle A.
- Added some from bottle B.
- Maybe a drop from bottle C in the next attempt.
- Tried adding water.
- Swirled and sniffed. A lot.
Let me tell you, the results were… well, they weren’t great. One mix was just plain rough, kinda burned going down. Another one tasted muddy, like all the flavours cancelled each other out. Nothing tasted balanced or smooth like the stuff Colin Scott apparently makes. It was a bit of a mess, actually.

Realization and Remembering Other Fails
It really hit me then how much skill must go into doing that properly. It’s not just sloshing stuff together. It’s knowing exactly what works, what notes combine well, how it’ll taste after sitting for ages. My little kitchen experiment felt pretty foolish afterwards.
It kind of reminded me of this one time years ago when my washing machine broke down. I thought, “It’s probably just a loose wire or something.” Watched a couple of videos online. Opened the back panel. Fiddled around inside for like an hour. Put it all back together. Turned it on, and bang! Sparks flew, shorted the electricity in the whole flat. Had to call a professional anyway, cost me double because I’d messed it up even more. Same energy, really. Thinking something looks easy from the outside, trying it yourself, and realizing you’re completely out of your depth.
So yeah, that’s my “Colin Scott inspired” moment. Didn’t end up with a masterpiece blend. Just ended up with a couple of glasses of weird-tasting whisky and a newfound respect for the actual master blenders out there. Now, I just buy the bottle and appreciate the work someone else put in. Much easier, and definitely tastes better.
