What is a Yo-Yo Test? Learn All About This Fitness Test!

Okay, so the other day I was trying to figure out what this “Yo-Yo Test” thing was all about. I’d heard the name tossed around, but I had zero clue what it actually involved. So, I did what any normal person would do: I started digging!

My Yo-Yo Test Deep Dive

First, I hit up some general fitness websites. Just to get a basic idea. Turns out, it’s a test used to check out how good someone is at running back and forth, over and over. Like, it measures your endurance, or something like that. Seemed pretty simple, I guess, but still vague.

Then, I wanted to know what it’s actually like. So, I found some guides that had the different levels and timings. It’s all about running between cones, with beeps telling you when to go, and the beeps get faster and faster. You keep going until you can’t keep up with the beeps anymore.

I decided to try understanding it better by imagining myself doing it. Okay, so you start running, beep, you run back, beep, run again…and it gets tougher each time. You’ve got these short recovery breaks, but mostly, it’s just running until you’re completely gassed. Sounds brutal, honestly.

To actually test the actual process, I found myself an empty street and two rocks.

  • I marked out a 20-meter distance in my street.(I think the measurement that I used is not accurate)
  • I found a Yo-Yo Test audio track on my phone (it’s just a bunch of beeps, really).
  • I started running when the beep told me to, trying to reach the other rock before the next beep.
  • The first few levels were fine, no problem. I could jog it easily.
  • I continued running.

But then… oh boy. Those beeps started getting closer together. My lungs were burning, my legs felt like lead, and I was seriously questioning my life choices.

I think i will never try this test again, it’s too hard for me.

Eventually, I missed a beep. Then another. And that was it. Game over. I was officially Yo-Yo’d out. I collapsed on the ground, gasping for air, feeling like I’d just run a marathon.

So, yeah, that’s the Yo-Yo Test. It’s a simple concept – run back and forth – but man, it’s a killer. I have a newfound respect for anyone who can get a decent score on that thing. I’m sticking to my regular, less-beep-filled workouts from now on.
