Today, I wanna talk about “one piece take away”. Sounds fancy, huh? Well, it ain’t about pirates or some anime stuff. It’s about golf, believe it or not.

So, I’ve been trying to get better at this darn golf game. My swing was all over the place, like a drunken sailor on a stormy sea. A buddy of mine, who’s way better than me, suggested I work on my “takeaway.” Apparently, it’s how you start your backswing, and it’s kinda crucial.
He told me, “You’re using your hands and arms way too much. It’s gotta be more of a body thing.” Like, use your shoulders and chest instead of just flicking your wrists. He said to imagine moving everything “in one piece,” like a statue turning on a pedestal, or something like that. I really paid attention to what my friend told me.
I went to the driving range, armed with this new idea. First few swings? Still a mess. I kept going back to my old ways, trying to muscle the ball with my hands. It felt unnatural to keep everything so connected, like I was made of cardboard. But I am very focused and I know practice makes perfect.
Then, I remembered another tip he gave me: keep your front arm close to your chest. Like, really snug, no space. So, I focused on that, trying to swing my arm across my body while keeping my triceps glued to my chest. I felt really weird, but I kept at it.
Slowly, things started to click. My swings felt smoother, less jerky. The ball started going straighter, too, which was a nice bonus. It’s like that feeling, you finally get it. I practiced and practiced and practiced that day.

Now, I’m not saying I’m gonna be on the PGA Tour anytime soon. But this “one piece takeaway” thing? It’s definitely helped. It’s all about that initial movement, getting your body involved, and keeping things connected. It’s made my swing feel more solid, more consistent. Sometimes I have to wait for the court for a long time but it’s worth it.
Here are the things I did to make it work:
- Used my shoulders and torso, not just my hands and arms.
- Imagined moving everything in one piece, like a statue turning.
- Kept my front arm snug against my chest during the takeaway.
- Practiced a lot, even though it felt weird at first.
- Reminded myself that this whole takeaway process was just the first step in a much bigger, more complicated swing. But it’s the foundation, and I needed to get it right.
If you’re struggling with your golf swing, give this a try. It might feel strange at first, but stick with it. It could be the thing that takes your game to the next level. Or, you know, at least makes you look a little less like a flailing windmill out there on the course.
