Squid Game Real Story: The Truth Behind the Games? Exploring the Dark Themes and Social Commentary.

So, I got sucked into this whole “Squid Game” thing on Netflix like everyone else, right? But then I saw some stuff online, like some TikTok videos and social media posts, saying it was based on a true story from way back in 1986. They were talking about some secret underground bunker in South Korea, no man’s land, where people were held hostage and forced to play these crazy games.

I mean, can you imagine? It sounded wild, so I started digging around. Apparently, this whole idea comes from a dark time in South Korea’s history, back in the ’70s and ’80s. They were under this super strict, authoritarian government, and it was a time of real repression, a tough time for people who spoke out against the powers.

Here’s what I did: I started with the social media posts. I read through a bunch of them, trying to see if there was any actual evidence or if it was just people making stuff up. There were a lot of claims, but not much to back them up.

  • Checked out historical sources: I looked up information about South Korea during that time period. I read articles and watched some documentaries about the political climate and the struggles people faced. It was definitely a messed up time, but no mention of any “Squid Game” type stuff.
  • Looked for official statements: I tried to find anything from Netflix or the creators of “Squid Game” about this supposed true story. I figured if it was real, they’d probably say something about it, right? But I didn’t find anything saying that.
  • Compared the show to the historical context: Even though I didn’t find proof of a real “Squid Game,” I thought about how the show’s themes of desperation, inequality, and fighting for survival might relate to the struggles people faced back then. It’s kind of like how art can reflect real-life issues, even if it’s not a literal retelling of events.

After doing all this, I came to my own conclusion. As much as the internet likes to make up crazy stories, “Squid Game” isn’t based on some specific event in 1986, at least not that I could find. It’s more like the show took inspiration from the general vibe of that time period – the harsh realities and the struggles people went through – and turned it into a fictional, but super intense, story.

So yeah, that’s my take on it. “Squid Game” is a great show, but it’s not a documentary. It’s a story that makes you think, and maybe it’s a little bit inspired by some real-life stuff, but it’s definitely not a “true story” in the way those TikTok videos were claiming.

What I learned

Don’t believe everything you see on the internet! It’s easy to get caught up in wild theories, but it’s important to do your own research and think critically about the information you find. Also, it’s interesting how art can reflect real-life issues, even if it’s not a direct retelling of events. “Squid Game” might not be a true story, but it definitely touches on some real-life themes that resonate with people.
