I dug deeper into his achievements. Andretti won the Formula One World Drivers’ Championship in 1978 with Lotus. He also won 12 Grands Prix across 14 seasons. That’s pretty impressive if you ask me. Then I looked at his IndyCar record. He was a four-time Indy Car National Champion, winning in 1965, 1966, 1969, and 1984. What a beast!
Focusing on the Indy 500
My main interest was his Indy 500 career, which spanned from 1965 to 1994. I watched some old footage of his races. It was wild to see how different the cars and the tracks were back then. He had only one Indy 500 win, and that was in 1969. I read that he led the first 16 laps of the 1966 Indianapolis 500 but had to retire. That must have been tough.
Exploring the NASCAR Connection
Then I got curious about his NASCAR stint. He had 14 starts in NASCAR. It’s interesting because I found out that he won the Daytona 500 on February 16, 1967. It was cool to learn that he was successful in different types of racing. There was one year in 1967, when Andretti competed in 45 races across nine categories, and won 12 of them.
Putting It All Together
I also found out that John Andretti, Mario’s nephew, was the first driver to attempt both the Indy 500 and a NASCAR race on the same day in 1994. Tony Stewart did the same and completed all 1,100 miles of both races in 2001. That’s insane endurance! Only five drivers have ever attempted this. Andretti, Robby Gordon, Stewart, Kurt Busch, and Kyle Larson.
