Indy Car Fanatic: See David Lettermans Race Team!

Okay, so today I got sucked into a bit of a rabbit hole – David Letterman and IndyCar. I mean, I knew he was a fan, but I didn’t realize how deeply involved he actually is. So, I decided to dig in and see what his connection to the sport really is.

Indy Car Fanatic: See David Lettermans Race Team!

I started off just by, you know, Googling. The usual stuff: “David Letterman IndyCar.” I was immediately hit with a bunch of articles and stuff about Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. That’s his team! I knew he was part of a team, but I guess I didn’t put two and two together that it was his team, named after him (and Bobby Rahal and Mike Lanigan, obviously).

Next, I started to look into the team’s history. So I spent maybe an hour, scrolling through the team’s website, looking at old race results, driver lineups, you name it. It’s pretty cool to see how long they’ve been around (since 1991, though originally it was just Rahal-Hogan Racing) and some of the big names that have driven for them. It was kinda neat to find old pictures of Letterman at the track, all smiles and clearly loving it.

I then started to explore some other sites. There are a bunch of fan forums and articles about IndyCar. Found many discussions and old interviews with Letterman talking about the sport. He’s not just a casual fan; he’s genuinely passionate about it. He talks about the strategy, the drivers, the technology… the whole shebang. He even joked about how he gets more nervous watching a race than he ever did hosting his show!

My discovery

  • I found that he became co-owner in 1996.
  • I have learned that Letterman is super hands-on (at least from what I can gather).
  • I read some articles, and he’s always talking about how much he respects the drivers and the whole team.

Honestly, it’s really cool to see someone so successful in one field be so genuinely passionate about something completely different. It made me appreciate IndyCar a little more, and it definitely made me see Letterman in a new light. This whole thing started with simple curiosity, and I ended up learning a ton. That’s the beauty of the internet, I guess!
