Right then, Hull City in the Premier League. Feels like a lifetime ago, doesn’t it? I got thinking about them the other day, just popped into my head. Remembered that bright orange kit. So, I thought, let’s actually dig into that time a bit, see what it was really like beyond the big headlines I sort of recalled.
First thing I did was just jump online. Didn’t go anywhere fancy, just started searching for stuff like “Hull City first Premier League season” or “Hull City famous Premier League moments”. You know how it is, just seeing what pops up.
Found a load of old match reports and highlights. Spent a good couple of hours just watching clips. Remember that Geovanni fella? Scored some absolute screamers early on. Watched that goal against Arsenal and the one against Spurs again. Unreal strikes. That really brought back the buzz they had at the start.
Digging a Bit Deeper
Then I started looking beyond just the goals. Tried to piece together the story of their seasons up there.
Key things I focused on:
- Getting player names I’d forgotten. Marlon King, Dean Windass (legend!), later on Jimmy Bullard.
- Looking up the actual league tables from back then. Seeing where they were week by week. Crazy start, then the slide.
- Reading about Phil Brown. That half-time team talk on the pitch against Man City. Mental. Found some fan forum threads from the time discussing it. People were either loving the passion or totally embarrassed.
It wasn’t just about watching YouTube. I tried finding old newspaper articles, digital archives if I could access them without paying. Wanted to get the feel from that exact time, not just modern summaries. Read some old fan blogs too, get the vibe from the terraces, so to speak.
Putting it Together
After gathering all this stuff, bits of video, some stats, old opinions, I just sort of sat back and processed it. It wasn’t a structured project, more like revisiting a memory properly. Went from that initial vague thought of “Hull City, yeah, they were in the PL” to actually reliving the rollercoaster.
Realised how big a deal it was for them to get there, the massive hype, those amazing early results. Then the reality kicking in, the struggles, the controversies, the eventual relegations. It felt more real than just remembering a couple of wonder goals. It was a proper journey, full of ups and downs, which is what football’s all about I guess.
So yeah, that was my little dive back into Hull City’s Premier League days. Started with a random thought, spent some time digging around online, watched some old clips, read some bits and pieces. Ended up with a much better feel for what that whole period was actually like for the club and its fans. Good stuff.
