How to Get What You Want: Understand Why Its Tended To as a Squeaky Wheel and Make Your Voice Heard!

So, I was thinking about this saying, “the squeaky wheel gets the grease.” It’s all about how people who speak up get noticed, right? I decided to put this to the test in my own life, and let me tell you, it was quite the experience.

How to Get What You Want: Understand Why Its Tended To as a Squeaky Wheel and Make Your Voice Heard!

It all started with a simple thing. I went to this coffee shop, you know, the one on the corner where I always get my usual – an iced latte. So, I ordered my drink, but when I got it, it was hot. Now, normally, I’d just shrug it off and drink it anyway. But this time, I thought, “Why not speak up?”

  • Ask for What You Want: I went back to the counter and politely told them that I ordered an iced latte, not a hot one. The barista was super nice about it, and they made me a new one right away. It got me thinking, why don’t I do this more often?
  • Question Everything: This whole coffee incident made me start questioning other things in my life. Like at work, there was this project that I really wanted to be a part of, but I never said anything. So, taking the squeaky wheel approach, I talked to my boss about it. I simply expressed my interest and asked if there was any way I could contribute.
  • Express Your Needs: Guess what? My boss was totally receptive! He had no idea I was interested and was happy to find a way to involve me. It was a real eye-opener. Speaking up led to an opportunity I would have missed otherwise.

From there, I started applying this “squeaky wheel” thing to other parts of my life. Like, there was this issue with my internet at home. It was always slow, and I just kind of dealt with it. But then I decided to call the internet company and, well, complain a bit. I told them about the issues I was having, and they sent a technician over.

  • Get Attention: Turns out, there was a problem with the wiring outside my house. They fixed it, and bam, my internet was faster than ever. It was like, why didn’t I do this sooner?

This whole experiment taught me a lot. It’s not about being a complainer, but rather about not being afraid to express what you want or need. Whether it’s getting the right coffee, landing a role in a project, or fixing your internet, it pays to be that squeaky wheel sometimes.

Keep in mind, though:

Being a squeaky wheel doesn’t mean you have to be rude or demanding. It’s all about how you approach the situation. I learned that being polite and clear about what you want gets you a long way. It’s also important to remember that not every wheel needs to be squeaky. Sometimes, it’s good to go with the flow and not sweat the small stuff. But when something really matters to you, don’t be afraid to speak up. You might be surprised at what you can achieve just by voicing your needs.
