Honda CB250 Night Hawk Problems (Common Issues and How to Fix Them Before You Buy)

Okay, so, I got this Honda CB250 Night Hawk a while back. It was a steal, really. But, you know how it is with older bikes, there’s always something. First off, I noticed she was having a bit of trouble starting. Not every time, but often enough to be annoying. I’d hit the starter, and it would just whir, not really catching.

So, I started digging around. Found out it’s a common thing with these older Night Hawks. Some folks online were talking about oil getting into the starter motor. Apparently, it can leak back out, which is not great. Another thing I saw mentioned was an imbalanced starter commuter shaft. Sounds complicated, but it’s basically just wear and tear.

Anyway, I figured I’d start with the basics. Checked all the connections, cleaned them up. I even used some of that dielectric grease – you know, the stuff that’s supposed to keep moisture out and help with the connection. Didn’t solve the starting issue, but hey, it’s good practice, right?

Clutch Problems

Then there was the clutch. Felt kinda worn, which, again, is expected with a bike this age. I mean, this thing’s from the 90s, so it’s seen some miles. I could still ride it, but it just didn’t feel as smooth as it should.

Carburetor Issues

Next up, the carburetor. Oh boy. I found a few forums where people were talking about carb issues with these bikes. One guy even mentioned ditching the fairing. I found a website, it seems that they have parts for 1993, which is also my bike, but I was not sure if it is a reliable vendor.

I tried to start her, and there was no spark. I found this one time, someone posted similar issue as mine, I followed his step and cleaned the connections but it didn’t work.

I started looking up parts online, and they are all over the place in terms of price. So the question is, is this thing worth fixing up, or should I just cut my losses? I’m still on the fence about it. It’s a fun little bike when it’s running right, but it’s definitely a project. One forum mentioned that the top speed is 80mph, but I never tried to drive that fast.

Some History

  • Seems like the CB750F2 was discontinued in Europe in 2001.
  • And the Nighthawk 750 was discontinued in North America in 2003.

So, yeah, that’s my story with the Honda CB250 Night Hawk. It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster, but hey, that’s what you get with these old bikes. You learn a lot, get your hands dirty, and have some fun along the way. I found a Haynes manual, someone told me that it will be helpful. I guess I will read the manual and do more troubleshooting in the coming weeks, will keep you guys posted.
