Formula One 1965: See the legends and the cars from that incredible era.

Okay, so I got this itch to dive into some retro racing, specifically Formula One from 1965. I’d been watching some old clips, and the raw, visceral feel of those cars just grabbed me. No fancy electronics, just pure driver skill and guts. I wanted to experience that, even if it was just through a game.

First, I scoured the internet for a decent simulator. I knew I wouldn’t find a dedicated “Formula One 1965” game, so I needed something that could be modded. I landed on Assetto Corsa. Seemed like the go-to for historical racing sims, with tons of community-made content.

Downloaded and installed it, which was pretty straightforward. Next, the real hunt began – finding the right mods. This took a while, clicking through forums, and a few kinda sketchy websites.

Finally, I stumbled upon a pack that promised the 1965 F1 season. Downloaded that bad boy, which was a hefty file, and then figured out how to install it. It involved dropping files into specific folders within the Assetto Corsa directory – not rocket science, but I definitely double-checked everything.

  • Downloaded Assetto Corsa
  • Searched for 1965 F1 mods
  • Downloaded a mod pack
  • Installed the mods into the game directory

Then I get the track mod. I found that one in forum.

Booted up the game, and there they were. The cars. They are looked amazing. The Lotus, the BRM, the Ferrari…all those classic machines. I picked the Lotus 25, because, well, Jim Clark. It is a pretty car.

I chose a track, I think that are good at that time, and hit the gas. Holy moly. These things were beasts! No power steering, no downforce, just raw engine power and skinny tires. I spun out about five times on the first lap. It was unbelievably difficult, but also exhilarating.

The challenge is real.

I spent the next few hours just wrestling with the car, trying to keep it on the track, learning the braking points, feeling the weight transfer. It was a completely different experience from modern racing games. I realized how much those drivers back then had to rely on pure feel and intuition.

I’m still terrible at it, to be honest. But I’m hooked. It’s like learning to drive all over again. There’s something so satisfying about taming these wild machines, even if it’s just on a virtual track. I definitely recommend anyone who’s into racing to give this a shot. It’s a history lesson and a driving challenge all rolled into one.
