Okay, so today I want to talk about this interesting thing I saw in the New York Times Mini Crossword. The clue was “Fare eaten by scavengers.” I thought, “What the heck is that?”
First, I grabbed my phone and opened up the NYT app. I started on the Mini Crossword for August 10th, because that’s where I saw this clue. They usually have some easy clues in there, but this one was kind of tricky.
I thought about what scavengers eat. Scavengers are animals that eat dead stuff, right? They don’t hunt their own food, they just eat what’s already dead. So, I needed a word for dead animals, or what’s left of them.
I tried a few words in my head, but nothing was fitting. Then it hit me! The word must related to dead organisms. So I typed that into the crossword, and guess what? It fit perfectly!

- The answer: dead organisms
Solving the Puzzle
So, I went through the rest of the clues for that day’s puzzle. Most of them were pretty straightforward. But figuring out that one clue about scavengers, that was the real challenge. It made me think a bit more, which is what I like about these crosswords.
After I finished the whole puzzle, I felt pretty good. It’s always satisfying to solve these things, especially when there’s a clue that stumps you at first.
