Alright, so I wanted to get a better handle on how defenses are stacking up this early in the season. It’s week 2, things are still kinda shaking out, but I figured it’s a good time to start tracking.

First, I jumped on the web to collect all the defensive stats I could find. Points allowed, yards allowed, sacks, interceptions, you name it. I just grabbed everything, It was a bit of mess, To be honest. a whole bunch of numbers all over the place.
Getting Organized
Next, I needed to put all this data into some kind of order. I fired up a trusty spreadsheet. I’m no spreadsheet wizard, but I can manage the basics. I created columns for each stat and started plugging in the numbers for each team. It took a while, scrolling through websites and copy-pasting, but eventually, I had it all in one place.
Calculating the Rankings
Now for the fun part! I used the “sort” functions to rank each category in ascending order.
After spending a fair bit of time messing around and sorting, here’s a rough snapshot of what came from it (just keeping it simple for now):
- Top Teams (Generally): These teams were consistently near the top in multiple categories.
- Surprise Risers: A few teams I didn’t expect popped up higher than I thought they would. Makes you rethink some pre-season assumptions!
- Still Shaking Out: Some teams were all over the place. Good in one area, terrible in another. It’s probably too early to draw real conclusions about them.
I’m going to keep tracking this weekly, adjusting the formula as I go. It’s a fun little project, and it helps me get a better feel for the league. Plus, It will be perfect for next week’s fantasy matchup!
