Today, I wanted to talk about something that happened to me recently – a little scare with my car’s emergency brake. It’s one of those things you don’t really think about until it doesn’t work, right?

So, there I was, parked on a bit of a hill. I pulled up the emergency brake, like always, and got out to run a quick errand. When I came back, I noticed my car had rolled back a few feet. My heart skipped a beat! I got back in, checked the brake, and sure enough, it was up as far as it would go. But the car still moved when I tested it.
First, I tried to see if I could feel anything wrong with the brake lever itself. It felt a little looser than usual, but nothing drastic. I remembered reading somewhere that sometimes the cables can get rusted or stretched out, so that was my next thought.
- I tried to pull the brake lever really hard and put it down many times, but the result was the same.
- Then I carefully drove my car to a flat area to see.
- I checked to see if the warning light on the dashboard was on, and unfortunately it was.
Since I’m not exactly a car expert, I decided to call my friend who knows a bit more about this stuff. He suggested I check the brake pads and shoes, just to see if they were worn out. He also mentioned that sometimes ice can build up around the brakes, especially in colder weather, and that can mess things up.
Honestly, I didn’t have the tools or the know-how to check the pads or shoes myself, but it wasn’t icy, so that wasn’t it. I did try rocking the car back and forth a little, like he said, while pulling the release lever, but no luck.
What I did in the end
In the end, I decided it was best to take it to a mechanic. It’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to brakes, you know? It turned out to be a stretched brake cable. The mechanic fixed it up for me, and now the emergency brake is working perfectly again. The mechanic also helped me reset the brake override system.

It was a bit of a hassle, but it was a good reminder to pay attention to these things. Don’t wait until something goes wrong. If you notice anything off with your emergency brake, like the warning light on or it not holding the car, get it checked out! It could save you from a bigger headache later on. So, yeah, that’s my little story about my emergency brake adventure.
