Alright, so I wanted to really nail down De’Anthony Melton’s position. I mean, the guy’s listed as a guard, but he does so much on the court, it felt like there was more to it. So, I started digging.

First, I just watched a bunch of games. Like, a LOT of games. I focused specifically on Melton, trying to see where he lined up, who he was guarding, and what kinds of plays he was involved in.
- Was he bringing the ball up the court like a point guard?
- Was he hanging out on the wing, waiting for a pass like a shooting guard?
- Or was he mixing it up, doing a little bit of everything?
My initial observation? The dude’s a combo guard, for sure. He definitely has the ball-handling skills to run the point, I saw him initiate the offense plenty of times. But, he’s also super comfortable playing off-ball. He can spot up for threes, cut to the basket, and make smart passes.
Then, I wanted some hard data. So, I checked out some of the websites where they provide advanced player stats and game breakdowns and charts and position data, all that stuff.
The numbers backed up what I was seeing. He spends time at both guard spots. Some games he’s playing mostly point, others he’s more of a two-guard. It really depends on the team’s lineup and the opponent.
Conclusion of my research
De’Anthony Melton’s position as a true combo guard. he can handle point guard duties, bringing the ball up and setting up plays, But he’s equally effective as a shooting guard, spotting up for shots and playing off the ball. that make him a valuable asset, able to adjust to different roles and team needs.
