Complete Training for Pitchers: Build Strength & Control

Okay, so today was all about working with my pitchers. Here’s how the training went down.

Complete Training for Pitchers: Build Strength & Control

Warm-up

We started with the usual – jogging, dynamic stretching, you know, getting the blood flowing. I had them do some arm circles, leg swings, and torso twists. Nothing fancy, just making sure everyone was loose and ready to go.

Throwing Progression

Next, we moved into our throwing progression. We began with some easy catches, focusing on a good grip and a smooth release. We gradually increased the distance, emphasizing mechanics over power at this point. I kept reminding them to stay balanced and use their whole body, not just their arm.

  • Short distance throws (about 30 feet) – 10 throws
  • Medium distance throws (about 60 feet) – 15 throws
  • Long toss (gradually increasing to maximum comfortable distance) – 20 throws

Bullpen Session

After the long toss, it was time for some bullpen work. Each pitcher threw about 30-40 pitches, working on different types of their pitches. I had them mix it up – fastballs, changeups, curveballs, sliders, whatever they had in their arsenal.

I paid close attention to their mechanics, looking for any hitches or inconsistencies. We talked about things like release point, arm slot, and follow-through. We also worked on hitting specific spots in the strike zone.

Conditioning

We finished up with some conditioning drills. I had them do some sprints, agility ladder work, and medicine ball throws. The goal here was to build up their stamina and explosive power. It’s a grind, but it’s got to be done.

Cool-down

Finally, we ended the session with a proper cool-down, including some static stretching to help with recovery. I have all my guys take their recovery seriously.

Overall, it was a good, solid day of work. We made some progress, and I was pleased and saw some good things out there. It’s all about putting in the time and effort, day in and day out.
