Okay, so, today I messed around with making a kite – a Christy kite, to be exact. I’ve always been kind of fascinated by kites, you know? There’s something so cool about watching them soar up in the sky. So, I figured, why not try making one myself? It seemed like a fun project.

First things first, I had to figure out what kind of kite I wanted to make. I mean, there are tons of different types out there. After some looking around, I decided on the Christy kite because, well, it looked interesting. It’s got this unique shape that I thought would be cool to try out.
Then came the fun part – actually getting my hands on some materials. Now, I didn’t have any fancy kite-making stuff lying around, so I had to get a bit creative. I found some old newspapers, some wooden dowels from an old project, and some string. I figured, hey, it’s worth a shot, right?
I started by laying out the newspaper and cutting it into the shape I needed. It wasn’t perfect, but I tried my best to follow the shape I saw in some pictures. Then, I used the wooden dowels to make the frame. I tied them together with string, trying to make it as sturdy as possible. It was a bit tricky, but I managed to get it done.
Next, I attached the newspaper to the frame. I used some glue that I found to stick it on. It wasn’t the neatest job, but hey, it held together. I had to let it dry for a while, so I took a break and grabbed a snack.
- Cutting the sail: This was the first real step. Getting the shape right was kind of important.
- Making the frame: This was probably the trickiest part. I had to make sure it was strong enough.
- Attaching the sail to the frame: Glue, glue, and more glue!
- Adding the tail: I almost forgot this part! I used some leftover newspaper strips.
- Letting it dry: Patience is key! I had to wait for the glue to dry completely.
Once the kite was dry, I added a tail. I just used some more strips of newspaper and tied them to the bottom of the kite. I heard that the tail helps with stability, so I figured it was an important step. Plus, it looked kind of cool.

Finally, it was time to test it out! I went to a nearby park, waited for a bit of wind, and gave it a go. And guess what? It actually flew! It wasn’t super graceful or anything, and it dipped and dived quite a bit, but it was up in the air. I was pretty stoked, not gonna lie.
So, yeah, that was my adventure making a Christy kite. It was a fun little project, and I learned a lot. Maybe next time I’ll try using some better materials and see if I can make it fly even better. But for now, I’m pretty happy with my homemade kite.
If you are looking for a kite, maybe a dual-line framed sport kite is a good option. I don’t know much about it, but it looks cool! My Christy kite is a single-line kite. There are many different types of kites you can make or buy. If you have enough patience, you can make one by yourself.
What I learned:
- Making a kite is harder than it looks!
- Newspaper and glue can actually work.
- It’s super satisfying to see something you made yourself actually fly.
