Baseball Stirrups: How to Choose the Right Pair (The Ultimate Guide for Players and Coaches)

Okay, so, stirrups in baseball. Let me tell you, I had a whole thing with these things recently. I’m getting back into playing a bit of baseball – nothing serious, just some local pick-up games. But I wanted to, you know, look the part. So, I started digging into what I needed, and that’s where the stirrup drama began.

First off, I went and bought myself some pants, and then I was like, “what the heck are stirrups?” Seriously. I knew they were some kind of sock, but that was about it. Turns out, they’re these long socks with a cut-out part at the bottom that goes under your foot. They usually have some stripes or team colors at the top.

I started looking around to figure out which ones to get. And man, it’s a whole thing. There’s a bunch of different types. I saw some that were all one color, some with stripes and some are even plain white at the bottom. The first thing I did was measure myself. I measured around my calf and from my ankle bone to just under my knee. Turns out I have skinny calves so I decided to go with a smaller size.

Then, I figured out the colors for the stirrups. I knew my team color is mainly blue and white, so I decided to look for some blue stirrups with a white stripe, so it matched my pants and socks. After looking for a while, I found some that I liked.

The next step was actually putting these things on. It’s a little more complicated than just pulling on a sock. You gotta put on your sanitary socks first which are these plain white socks. Then, you pull the stirrups on over them. It was a bit of a struggle at first, and I definitely got them on wrong a couple of times. But eventually, I got the hang of it.

After that, I put on my baseball pants and cleats and headed out to the field. They looked really good and matched my uniform well. I played my game and had a good time, but I noticed that my stirrups kept sliding down. I guess I didn’t pull them up tight enough.

After the game, I threw these suckers in the wash, and then hung them up to dry. I didn’t want them to shrink. After they were all dried, I put them in my baseball bag so they are ready for the next time I play.

So, yeah, that’s my whole saga with baseball stirrups. It was a bit of a learning curve, but now I feel like a pro. Or at least I look like one. Mostly. Sort of.
