So, I got curious the other day about who’s actually coaching Daniil Medvedev. You see him play, you see the team box, but sometimes it’s not totally clear who the main voice is.
My first thought was just to look it up, obviously. I typed something like “medvedev coach name” into the search bar. The first name that popped up pretty consistently was Gilles Cervara. Okay, that seemed straightforward enough. I remember seeing him around in Medvedev’s matches for ages.
It seems Cervara has been the head coach for a long time. Digging a bit deeper, I saw he was with Daniil when he won that big one, the US Open back in 2021. That makes sense, right? You stick with the coach who gets you a Grand Slam.
But then things got a little confusing…
As I was looking around, another name started appearing: Gilles Simon. I recognized that name, a former player himself, a pretty smart guy on court. I saw some articles mentioning he’d joined Medvedev’s team. So, I thought, “Wait, did Cervara leave? Or do they coach together?”
- First, I found info saying Simon joined the team.
- Then, almost immediately, I found newer stuff saying Simon left the team.
Okay, so that needed sorting out. It wasn’t like Cervara was out. It turns out Simon joined up with Cervara and Medvedev, I think sometime early in 2024, or maybe late 2023? He wasn’t replacing Cervara, more like adding another perspective.
But that arrangement didn’t last too long. I saw reports, maybe from Medvedev himself on social media I guess, saying they decided to stop working together. It sounded pretty amicable, like they learned from each other but decided it was time to part ways. Happened just recently, seemed like after about a year.
So, the process was like this:
1. Wondered who the coach was.
2. Found Gilles Cervara – the main, long-term guy.
3. Got confused by Gilles Simon’s name appearing.
4. Figured out Simon joined temporarily alongside Cervara.
5. Realized Simon had already left the team after about a year.
It also looks like Medvedev uses the Mouratoglou Academy setup sometimes for training, and there’s a physical trainer involved too, Eric Hernandez I think his name was. Makes sense, it’s never just one person.
So, after digging around a bit, the answer is clear: Gilles Cervara is the head coach. Gilles Simon was also part of the coaching team for a while, but that partnership ended recently. It’s mainly Cervara steering the ship.
