Today, I messed around with something called “dinossum”. I had heard about it before, and figured I’d give it a shot. Basically, it’s a tool to create simple websites.
Getting Started
First, I needed to get it installed. I went straight to installing the thing. It’s written in Deno, so installation was a breeze.
I opened up my terminal and typed the install command. Once that was done, I checked if everything was alright by running a simple command to see the version.
Building My First Page
Next up, I wanted to actually build something. I followed the setup instructions.I started by making a new folder for my project. Inside, I made a `content` directory. Seemed straightforward enough.
Then, I created a file called `*` inside the `content` folder. I just wanted a simple “Hello, world!” kind of thing, so I put a simple title in it. Just pure markdown.
Running the Thing
Now, the exciting part – seeing if it actually worked! I ran dinossum build command with the input and output options. It did its thing, and I saw some output in the terminal saying it was generating the site.
Then, I typed the serve command to view my newly created website. Lo and behold, there it was! My “Hello, world!” page, plain and simple, but it worked! It’s like magic, but it’s really just markdown and a bit of code.
Playing Around
After that, I started experimenting a bit more. I created another file inside the `content` directory, this time with a bit more stuff in it. I added some headings, and a bit of text. Ran the build command again, refreshed the browser, and boom – my changes were there.
I also found an examples folder in the dinossum install directory and got some tips from looking at these.
Wrapping Up
Honestly, dinossum seems pretty neat for quickly putting together a basic website. No fuss, no complicated setup, just write some markdown and you’re good to go. I can see myself using this for small personal projects or maybe even for documentation.
