So, I wanted to track my speed and distance when I’m out riding my bike. I didn’t need anything fancy, just something basic and reliable. I picked up a Schwinn bike speedometer from the local store – seemed simple enough, and the price was right.
Getting Started
First thing I did was unpack everything. Inside, there was the speedometer unit itself, a mounting bracket, a sensor, a magnet, and a bunch of zip ties. I grabbed my bike and took a look at the instructions – mostly pictures, which is good because I’m not great at following complicated directions.
Installation Process
I started by attaching the mounting bracket to my handlebars. That was pretty straightforward, just used the provided screws. It felt secure, so I moved onto the sensor. This was going to attach to my front fork.
Next I found which is need to lined up the sensor with where the magnet will be positioned when I install it later on. Then I fastened them with zip ties at a good position.
Now for the magnet. This little guy attaches to one of the spokes on my front wheel. I loosened the screw on the magnet, slid it onto a spoke, and tightened it back up. The key here is to make sure the magnet lines up with the sensor as the wheel spins. I gave the wheel a spin to check, and it seemed good – the magnet passed right by the sensor with a small gap.
With everything mounted, I put the speedometer unit into the bracket. It clicked in nicely. Now, I needed to input my wheel size. The instructions had a chart, but I just measured the diameter of my wheel and did some quick math to get the circumference. I used the buttons on the speedometer to enter that number.
Taking it for a Spin
I hopped on my bike and took off down the street. And… it worked! The speedometer started showing my speed. I rode around the block, testing it out. It tracked my distance too, which was cool. I even played around with the different modes – there’s one that shows your average speed, another for maximum speed, and a clock. Pretty neat for a simple gadget.
Final Thoughts
Overall, I’m happy with this Schwinn speedometer. It does what it’s supposed to do, and it was easy to install. The display is easy to read, even in sunlight.
