Today, let’s talk about Will McGirt. I heard about this guy a while back, but I didn’t really pay too much attention until recently. There was a case, a pretty big deal, that had his name on it, and it got me curious. So, I started digging into it.

What did I do?
First off, I just did a simple search online. Typed in “Will McGirt” and read through some basic articles to get a general idea. It seemed like he was involved in some legal stuff related to Native American rights. I’m no lawyer, so a lot of it was a bit confusing at first.
But I kept at it. I found this one article that explained the case pretty well. It talked about how McGirt was convicted in Oklahoma state court for some serious crimes. But then, his lawyers argued that the state didn’t actually have the right to prosecute him. They said that the crime happened on land that was part of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation’s reservation, and because of that, only the federal government could charge him.
What did I find?
- The case went all the way up to the Supreme Court.
- The Supreme Court actually agreed with McGirt and his lawyers.
- They ruled that a big chunk of eastern Oklahoma is still technically part of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation’s reservation.
Now, I’m not gonna lie, the whole legal side of things is still a bit fuzzy for me. But from what I understand, this ruling was a huge deal. It basically means that the state of Oklahoma has been prosecuting Native Americans for years when they shouldn’t have been. It also means that a lot of cases might need to be retried in federal court instead of state court.
This whole thing got me thinking about the history of Native Americans in Oklahoma and how messed up it’s been. It seems like the government just made promises and then broke them whenever it was convenient. This Supreme Court decision feels like a small step towards correcting some of those wrongs, but there’s obviously still a long way to go.
I’m definitely going to keep an eye on this story and see how it develops. It’s a good reminder that there’s a lot of stuff going on in the world that we don’t always hear about, but it’s important to pay attention and try to understand what’s happening, even if it’s complicated.

It’s a crazy world. You hear these names, and you don’t really think much of it, then boom, it’s connected to some huge legal battle that changes everything. I’m glad I took the time to learn about it, though. Makes you think.
You never know when you might stumble upon something that completely changes your perspective, right? Like this whole McGirt case – who knew? Not me, until I bothered to do some digging. It’s worth it to stay curious, I guess.
