So, I’ve been watching a lot of boxing lately, and there’s this term “UD” that keeps popping up. I figured it’s time I actually learned what it means, you know, to understand the fights better. So I started my little research project on “what is UD in boxing.”

First, I just typed it into Google, like you do. Right away, a bunch of articles came up, mostly about this thing called a “Unanimous Decision.” Okay, sounds fancy. Clicked on the first one, and it said that a UD is when all three judges agree on who won the fight. Basically, they all picked the same boxer on their scorecards.
Reading through a couple more articles, I found that this UD thing is used in a bunch of other fighting sports too, like kickboxing and MMA. Apparently, in boxing, each judge keeps track of points, and if they all end up with the same winner, boom, that’s a UD. I even read that back in the day, they just kept fighting until someone couldn’t go on. No judges, no points, just a knockout or, well, not being able to stand up anymore.
Then I stumbled upon this Wikipedia page. It had a whole history section! Talked about how the National Sporting Club started this whole professional glove thing and how scoring came into play. It also listed some famous boxers with a lot of UD wins, like Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Muhammad Ali. Those guys have like 20 and 18 UD wins, respectively. Crazy, right?
I also discovered that there’s something called a “Majority Decision” (MD), which is when two out of the three judges agree on the winner, but the third judge thinks it’s a draw. So, a UD is a clear win, while an MD is a bit more, I guess, debated?
I even watched a video about it. The guy in the video explained everything in a pretty simple way. He also mentioned something called a “corner retirement,” which is when a boxer’s team throws in the towel, basically saying, “Nope, we’re done.” That’s apparently marked as “RTD” in the records. I remember seeing one of the fights where a fighter’s corner stopped the fight.

So, after all this digging, I finally get it. A UD, or Unanimous Decision, means all the judges agree on who won the fight. It’s a clear win, and it’s used in lots of fighting sports, not just boxing. It’s pretty straightforward, but it’s cool to know the history behind it and how it all works. Now, when I watch fights, I won’t be all confused when they say “UD.”
