1968 Indy 500 Crazy Race (See How a Turbine Car Almost Won)

So, I was messing around with this 1968 Indy 500 thing today. It was a real trip down memory lane, you know?

First, I started digging up some old info on the race. Turns out, 1968 was a big year for those turbine-powered cars. They were all the rage, and everyone thought they were gonna take the whole thing. I found some stuff online saying how Joe Leonard was killing it in his turbine car, leading the pack with just a few laps to go.

  • I spent like an hour just reading about these turbine cars.
  • Apparently, they were like the future back then.
  • Really got into how they worked and why everyone was so hyped.

Then I got curious about who actually won that year. It was Bobby Unser, who I guess was a pretty big deal in racing. I stumbled upon some old article that called him the “hottest American driver” that year. Made me chuckle a bit.

After that, I dove into the whole turbine car story a little more. There was this quote I found, something about how the “cry of the lonely turbocar faded away” the year before when one was super close to winning. It sounded so dramatic! I imagined everyone’s hearts breaking as it didn’t quite make it. It’s wild to think about how much hype there was around them for the 1968 race.

I ended up just going down this rabbit hole of old racing stories. It was a cool way to spend the day. It’s amazing how much history there is behind these events. You just gotta take the time to look for it.

Looking Back

It’s kind of funny looking at old stuff like this. It’s like, you see how much things have changed, but also how some things stay the same. The excitement around the race, the drama, the personalities… it’s all still there in racing today. Just a bit different. It got me a little nostalgic, not gonna lie.
