Enough would have been said in the media, in a customary fashion, about the comments made by Bush and his assistant Condi Rice on the ‘Rice’ problem created by India. Hence it would be inappropriate to further dissect the subject matter on various dimensions such as economics, capitalist arrogance, anti-socialism and what not.
Reading through the reasons provided by Bush and his coterie brings back nostalgia and a sense of deja-vu. The sense of deja-vu is because one gets to feel that such statements and reasoning ( if one could call that reasoning ) have been heard before at home in Indai. We have been used to such ‘reasoning’ at home attributable to the Dravidian leadership.
Let us look at some of the reasoning from the irrefutable and highly erudite ‘scholars’.
The state finance minister Anbazhagan professed ( as he was a professor earlier )that the price rises are attributable to the increased purchasing power of people. Whether he meant the ‘purchasing’ power of his cabinet colleagues or some body else is not very clear at the moment.
So, what does ‘purchasing power’ mean ? In case the ordinary people have been so empowered, then does it mean that they are hoarding the grains ? Then does the DMK endorse the views of George Bush ?
Not that the world believes that Bush understood economics and world economy. But that the all knowing erudite rationalist politicians of Tamil Nadu believe that the purchasing power of the people has gone up. If that be the case, why should the government continue with the free electricity and colour TV scheme for the poor in Tamil nadu ? ( The next in line for the coming elections could be free-sex for the bachelors below poverty line of Tamil Nadu. When the government can enter liquor business, then what stops it from entering the ‘sleaze’ business too)
Now that the purchasing power of the people has risen, is it not the right time to do away with the Rs 2 per Kg rice scheme ? Who will buy the cheap rice as the people have become rich and have started buying ‘branded’ rice from the super markets of the state?
Now that the purchasing power of the people has risen, is there any need for continuing reservation in the state / nation? As the purchasing power has apparently risen, the people would have been able to afford high quality education in elite private schools.
Therefore, why waste money on government schools ?The governments of the day both at the center and the state have blamed every entity on earth for the rising inflation and food crisis except buildings and mountains. Everything from the previous NDA government to the new found appetite in South Indians for wheat has been blamed which is akin to the myriad causes for Iraq war ranging from “WMD” to Democracy to Al-Qaeda to Oil. Thus Bush is an eminent candidate for the DMK.
Let us for a second assume that what ever Bush and Condi had said is correct. What is wrong in that ? Increased nutrition on the part of India and China in the recent years would definitely indicate that these two countries are doing well and the middle class is able to afford better food than they used to. That is a good sign and American recognition of the increasing growth of India. Well, the remark from Bush should be treated as a compliment for the growth story that is India.
Trained to think logically ( a taboo in ‘Rationalistan’ that is Tamil nadu ), I have a question here. When the politicians from the red to the green to the white representing all the colors of the visible spectrum echoed such unanimous sentiments after Bush made the remark, they were no where to be seen when China made a statement that Arunachal Pradesh was an integral part of China and that the people from Arunachal Pradesh would not need visas to travel to China. The communists in particular chose to appear to be deaf. Shall we call this ‘selective hearing impairedness’ ? I know that the DMK would not have made any statement on this either as they don’t understand anything other than ‘Shipping’, ‘Sethu’,’Cable TV’, and ‘Amma’.
Not only with respect to the world food crisis, I find Bush and the DMK treading the same path even in other issues as well.
The DMK firmly believes that the ‘Aryan Invasion’ was the reason for the ‘Dravidian’ downfall ( Let us for a moment forget the fact that even the BBC has refuted the Aryan Invasion theory in one of its documentaries). Similar imaginary rationale was behind Bush’s invasion of Iraq too. He professed that Saddam Hussein was evil personified and that he had ‘WMD” and that he was sponsoring Al_Qaeda. It is another matter that now a days WMD has come to represent “Where (are the weapons of ) Mass Destruction”. It is also another matter that the ‘Proofs’ that Colin Powel showed the UN earlier in 2003 were basically third rate Power Point Presentations and therefore are not worth more than a dime.
Now that we have understood that what ever Bush had spoken was in line with what ever Anbazhagan has spoken in Tamil Nadu, why should we not consider Bush as the right candidate to join the DMK ? In any case Stalin’s position is safeguarded as Bush doesn’t have a son and his only daughter has been married off recently.
