A Muslim? Must be a terrorist, A Christian? Must be a proselytiser!
Written by
Girish Nikam
The events in the last one week from Delhi to Karnataka have brought to the fore again one particularly dangerous tendency which we as a nation seem to be afflicted with. Jumping to conclusions.

If one keeps one's ears open and alert while walking in a park, down the street or in a market place, one can hear the way people keep jumping to conclusions. It is seen in a more macabre form if one browses through the net and various news web sites, and reads the insane and highly provocative comments.

Even when you talk to colleagues in your work place or overhear conversations, nowadays it is full of people jumping to conclusions. "All Muslims 'may' not be terrorists, but all terrorists are Muslims", is one of the pet theories of people who feel that India is being run over by Muslims. "May" is a concession shown grudgingly. How does one come to this conclusion? A question like this if asked will draw ire and glares, which clearly says, "You pseudo-secular b----d grrr, you are also part of this conspiracy".

The other day a mail landed in the Gmail inbox, from an ex-student.
"Do you know most of the terrorists caught after the Delhi blasts are from Azamgarh, which has produced most wanted criminals like Abu Salem, Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Shakeel? Now what do you think about Muslim miscreants from Azamgarh?".  The last line, the question, is obviously almost accusatory in tone.

Now look at some of the conclusions the sender of the mail has jumped into. "most of the terrorists caught", he says. Even before the investigations are complete, even when there are so many contradictions between the UP, Gujarat and Delhi police about who is the mastermind and who was behind which blast, our friend has come to the conclusion that "terrorists" have been caught! There is no iota of doubt left in the minds of many that they are terrorists, many of whom are studious students with high marks in their previous exams. And "Muslim miscreants of Azamgarh". So all the Muslims of Azamgarh have now been dubbed as "miscreants"!

One can understand an uninformed or semi-informed ordinary citizen with the burden of inherited biases towards the minorities jumping to conclusions this way. But how does one stomach these biases popping up on your TV screens with alarming regularity. "Two terrorists killed, two more terrorists escape", the TV screens went berserk all through that morning and day when the encounter in Jamia Nagar in Delhi took place. "Two terrorists killed"? "Two more terrorists escape"?? There was not even that minimum and basic journalistic caution employed, which has taught us all, that till someone is proved guilty, one has to use the word "suspected" and "alleged". But no such journalistic niceties for our TV channels. Sorry, such niceties will spoil the excitement, you see.

On the other hand, deep down south in Karnataka, we have been witnessing how the Christians are being terrorized by sister organisations of the ruling BJP, like the Bajrang Dal, Sri Rama sena, VHP and others. But never has anyone come to the conclusion that "terrorists" are involved. They are of course the "soldiers", who are trying to protect their religion from being overridden by Christian proselytisers.

Pray, how many Hindus have been proselytized, against their will (the law bans conversions against the will, not willing conversions)?

None of these organisations, who are going berserk, under the benign gaze of the Government in Karnataka, are willing to give authentic figures. Incidentally, Christian population which was 1.91 percent of the total population in Karnataka in 1991 has remained the same according to 2001 census. And its decadal growth rate at 16.1 percent is lesser than the state average of 17.5 percent.

So where is the proof of large scale conversions into Christianity, as claimed by even the Ministers and Chief Minister? Yet, many people are jumping to conclusions that all the violence against Christians are a result of conversions.

The Bajrang Dal goons who make these claims of conversions and justify letting themselves loose in the State and are even loudly proclaiming on TV that they are responsible for the attacks, are not arrested. When they are finally and reluctantly arrested, after the Centre threatens with two directives, Mahendra Kumar, the chief Bajrangi goon, is let off on bail two days later. Yeddyurappa talks of employing anti-goonda act against those creating trouble, but before that his brother-in-arms, Mahendra Kumar is already released.

But those who are jumping to conclusions about the Azamgarh boys don't see any conspiracy in this. On the other hand, Yeddyurappa and his bosses in Delhi see what's happening against the Christians in Karnataka as a conspiracy against his Government. Pray who is conspiring against Yeddyurappa? The Bajrangi, Mahendra Kumar and his ilk??

Obviously, from Advani or Yeddyurappa or his Home Minister, V.S.Acharya's point of view, law for Mahendra Kumar and his goons has to presume that they are innocent before they are proved guilty. Perfectly alright. But when Mahendra Kumar goes on TV and confesses he and his goons are behind the attacks, a Karnataka minister says he said it in an "emotional outburst" and didn't mean it.

But when it comes to the boys of Azamgarh, the extensive leaks by the police, about these boys having "confessed" about their role in the blasts across the country, is good enough to dub them "terrorists". Any doubts being raised about these "confessions" are immediately dubbed as pseudo-secular balderdash, and vote bank politics!

Just to set the record straight finally, one is not attempting to make out a case for terrorists who have gone on killing innocent people. But as a nation if only we can wait before jumping to conclusions, we would have controlled a lot of these terrorist acts. Let not the burden of proving their innocence be on one community, by presuming their guilt. While the majority community expects its innocence to be presumed until it is found guilty.

Let us not presume that if Christian churches and prayer halls are attacked, it was because they asked for it. And if the Muslims talk about being targeted, profiled and stereotyped, they are imagining it and are suffering from a sense of victimhood. What one is asking for is that let law be applied equally and fairly. And let the dictum, "innocent until proven guilty" be applied to all. And let's not jump to conclusions conveniently. Is that too much to ask?

No one is jumping to conclusions here. When Law enforcements
agencies point finger at SIMI, they don’t say that all Muslims
are terrorists. Similarly, when Christian Missionaries try to
convert Hindus and Sikhs by hook and crook, that does not
mean all Christians are proselytiser. You are exactly the kind
of person who calls all Hindus as Hindutvadis. How does it feel
when Hindus say that you are steriotyping us all. And as for
Terrorists, yes some Muslims had connections with SIMI. So
is it with some missionaries, yes some did convert by hook
and crook.

You are raising your voice for people from Azamgarh…Whatz wrong in suspecting or introggating them even if you have minimum suspision. Do you know that an innocent Muslim applying for US Visa is asked more questions than any other person belonging to other religion? Can you find out a reason for this? Or do you want to say that US is also anti-minority?
It is a well known fact that major terror strikes in US, UK and in India are carried out by Muslims. So, if a muslim applies for Visa, US wants check their background, ask lots of questions etc so that they are very confident that this person is of no danger. Its only bcos of PAST EXPERIENCE and PAST EXPERIENCE and findings pin point to Muslim root for terrorist attack.

On a sidenote, tell us what is the fate of the “proven” terrorist like Afzal Guru. Why is he not yet hanged? It is only people like you are telling that Hindus consider all Muslims as terrorist. We do not see a terrorist in Abdul Kalam. We respect him. We have AR Rehman..We respect him…We have many Muslim cricket players like Pathan, Zahir Khan etc. Do we see them as terrorists? Or do we see Shah Rukh or Amir Khan as terrorist?

Its only you people have to change your view….When we see a terrorist, we see him as a terrorist. Just a terrorist. But, people like you see a MUSLIM in a Terrorist.

Again, u ask for the proof of mass conversion….What to tell? It has spread all over India like cancer…Pope has said that he wants the rate of conversion in India to achieve a particular target. And you pretend to write as if no illegal conversion has taken place…

Finally, you have voiced for Muslims & Christians (in Azamgarh and in K’tka). But, there was no article from you on the Amarnath Issue (an Hindu issue). There was no article from you on the plight of Kashmiri Pundits who are living as refuge in there own land.(again, an Hindu issue)

How you pen writes only for religion other than Hindu? How your key board types only issues relating to Muslims and Christains?

And you feel offended if someone calls you “pseudo-secular”?

I cannot understand your pain in justifying the terrorist acts and terrorists themselves !
If you cannot see for yourself who has been committing terrrorist acts like blasts, serial blasts, etc in several cities you can choose to be ignorant but not blind !
Whereas the Islamic terrorists are carrying out a hit & run tactic, the tactics of RamSena or BDal are straightforward and bold in appearance. They do not play a hide-seek game and are available for comments or questioning anytime. That, my friend, is the basic difference between them and Islamic terrorists !
While they proclaim suicide pacts and are ready to die for their cause, they do not have the guts to come forward and put forth their views in public / media ! Whereas, Ram Sena or BDal or any such outfit has openly criticized slanderous proselytizing by Christians and have taken up issues with the Govt, but only due to adamancy on the part of UPA, they are blinded by ‘minority’ appeasement and votes, hence have declined to even discuss about the malpractices going on in the name of Jesus Christ !!
Whether you like it or not, Truth is always bitter and hard to digest by pseudo-seculars !!

There is no reason for fear by Christians or Muslims, so long as they do NOT trample upon Hindus practices or way of life.
Now, it is only the reckoning time for their own misdeeds and better learn to live in a society without causing harm to others.
LIVE and LET LIVE !!

The bluff and bluster of the saffronites did not help their political fortune in the 2004 general election. In fact BJP is seen as a party that is as corrupt as any other political party in India. The electorate belatedly discovered the saffron brigade as plunderers and not as saviors of the nation. The radical extremism of the Sangh parivar is not likely to catapult the saffronites to power in Delhi next year. The livelihood of the saffronite hardliners depends on the violence they could instigate against the minorities in the name of Lord Ram. Demolition experts in the case of Ayodhya and against demolition in Sethu samudram in the coast of Tamilnadu.

The original demolition experts were the Muslims who demolished the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. Can you deny that ?
Please do not exacerbate the situation unnecessarily.
Why should it take more than 50 years for the issue to be resolved peacefully ? Unwanted politicization has disadvantaged Hindus more than anything else.
Note that I am not from BJP or any Hindu organization, still I am distressed to find the appeasement of minorities at the cost of Hindus, which is the core issue at hand.

Just as the addresser finds the appeasement of minorities at the cost of Hindus distressing, the addressee finds the aggrandizement of the majority at the expense of the minorities disgusting.

What are you really concerned about Mr.Nikam? That muslims are involved in terrorist activities which are not just disruptive or criminal, but anti national in nature and a threat to the very sovreignty of the nation is an internationally recognized problem now. If some more of the same community are ’suspected’ (and these are not lay suspicions but suspicions based on investigations by our investigative and law enforcement agencies), its natural that eyebrows will be raised and fingers will be pointed on those who have been detained. Any investigative procedure is based on suspicion and its confirmation by relevant proof–that is THE job of the agencies. Who are we to point fingers at a community, however, its an attempt by people like you to divert the attention of people in general from the real issues and prevent a national consensus on such issues. By making such irresponsible remarks at such a time, you are actually strengthening the hands of the terrorists and demoralizing the law enforcement agencies, who are already under a lot of pressure from all quarters due to appeasement politics. The terrorists must be smiling right now sitting in their dens at how successful they have been at not just commiting such heinous crimes, but getting tacit support from people like you.

As far as anti conversion law is concerned, which bans conversions against will- who are those responsible for such conversions fooling when they are saying they are willing conversions. The will of the poor, illiterate tribal people of such regions are so vulnerable to small temptations of promises of false sense of social upliftment, monetary help and lure of a better life, but only at the cost of giving up their religious beliefs. Why cant these missionaries, if they are so inclined to help, serve the humanity without luring them into changing their religious beliefs and nurturing a sense of hatred against their mother religion.
My friends, there is definitely an outside connection in all this. The funding and directives come from outside the country. Not just for these missions but also for the islamic terrorist acts. Its a huge conspiracy against our nation which is essentially and primarliy Hindu in character, to keep it always subdued by such nefarious issues. Its the biggest irony of our nation, where majority is Hindus, all sorts of assualts on their thoughts, cultural, spiritual belief systems, property and life have been going on for centuries. Of course, we are responsible- since we are not united. Ofcourse we are responsible, since our tolerance knows no bounds. Ofcourse we are responsible, since we have let others take advantage of the ills of our own society. We are responsible, since instead of introspection and reforms on the scale required, we kept basking in the glory of our ancient past and did nothing to improve our present.(The efforts by some great hindu visionaries of past few centuries are miniscule comapared to what needs to be done to wash away the slave mentality that is blocking the way for our nation to become a self sufficient, ecnomic, political and military superpower.) However, that does not mean all is lost, that does not mean that even after 60 years of freedom from British rule, such attackes on culture, religion, life and property will have to continue. You blame organizations like B.dal for violence against christians.
First of all, i seriously doubt that Bajrang Dal is so strong an organization in southern states to be able to engineer such open acts of violence. Secondly Yes, violence against our fellow countrymen is not right. And whoever has done that should be punished. However, the reasons that lead to such sponatanoeus acts of violence need to be looked into. If the system and the state is not addressing this and related issue, there is bound to be a reaction. I ask you all a question, how would you react, if an outsider comes at your home one evening and the next morning you find that your own brother with whom you had some petty differences is ready to part ways with you. You do love your brother, inspite of the differences, but this outsider has made him go totally against you and he is ready to shun all that you had in common…how would you feel for that outsider……and how will you respond?

Vishnu says Hindu tolerance knows no bounds. Perhaps he does not know that a vast Hindu expatriate community is living in western European countries and in North America. These people will tell him what religious tolerance is all about if he cares to know . Rape, burning human beings to death and razing churches to rubble is certainly not tolerance. I am sure Hindu expatriate community living in western countries are hanging their heads down in shame. Perhaps some of them will read my statement and may comment if they think what i say is not true. Hindu fundamentalism and radical extremism in India is known to the international community for quite sometime.Terrorism is no longer a monopoly for the jehadis. Hindu extremists are branded as terrorists in western capitals now. Indian PM got an earful of this from EU leaders in France last week.
