P Balaji Ganesh, Kovilampoondi

Question: "Dr Ramadoss knows about me and Jayalalithaa very well," says Karunanidhi. What is the statement's significance?

Answer: It is a statement of fact. Dr Ramadoss has understood clearly that if he is in one camp, the other would seek his help by raising the ante. This has led to his alternating between the two main political camps and gaining additional clout every time. It is a good line of business comparable to that of an auction house.

R Mohan, Theni

Question: I await the hour when the masses would recall the Dravidian movement in the same breath as they refer to India as a whole, to breathe my last, says Karunanidhi. Comment.

Answer: I wish him a long life!

P Vasu, Palayamkottai

Question: What is the reason behind P Chidambaram's complaint that Congress lost power in Tamil Nadu [in 1967] only because of the party's agreeing to bear with incapability and administrative degeneration?

Answer: He needn't have beaten around the bush. All he needed to say was that his party placed faith in politicians!

N Kuppuswamy, Coimbatore 14

Question: What is your take on Uma Bharati's claim that for the sake of Ram Sethu, she can sacrifice her life as well as take others' lives?

Answer: While I think that her claim of sacrifice is a tall one, her ability to sacrifice others' lives will be vouched for by several leaders of the BJP.

P Balaji Ganesh, Kovilampoondi

Question: The different good attributes present in Jayalalithaa and Karunanidhi are varied; but they are not possessed by the two, you have been quoted as saying. Comment

Answer: Karunanidhi has the habit of belittling recipients of his largesse by giving details. Jayalalithaa doesn't do that. That is a good trait absent in the CM. On the other hand, Karunanidhi exchanges pleasantries with even those who had criticised him vehemently when he meets them in public places. That is a good habit absent in Jayalalithaa.

P Choodamani, Chennai 93

Question: Do you think that Indians attempting to go abroad will be badly affected following charges against NRIs of attempting to sabotage public installations in the UK?

Answer: Antecedents will be checked with more thoroughness. It is inevitable.

Mallika Anbazhagan, Chennai 78

Question: Who are Jayalalithaa and Vaiko trying to impress by predicting imminent political change?

Answer: Jayalalithaa is egging herself on. Understanding the capital in this move, Vaiko is trying to impress her.

Shanker Kamalanathan, Chennai 69

Question: The minorities will certainly be given reservations very soon, says Karunanidhi. Can he do so by promulgating an ordinance?

Answer: According reservations to religious minorities is ultra vires of the Constitution. So any attempt to do so, through ordinance or otherwise, will be struck down by the courts. By promulgating an ordinance, Karunanidhi can shift the blame by saying his good work was undone by the judiciary.

V Jaya Sundaram, Madurai 17

Question: Haven't you heard that a person who adulterated food was given capital punishment in China?

Answer: Is it so? It is indeed unfortunate that the person happened to be in China.

In India, the said individual could have even become our President!

S Swaminathan , Dalmiyapuram

Question: The masses voted en masse for the AIADMK when MGR was alive. Now popular sentiments oscillate between the DMK and the AIADMK. Why?

Answer: One probable reason is Jayalalithaa's failure to notice that the winning paths are generally paved by [strong] alliances.

N Kuppuswamy, Coimbatore 14

Question: What is the vital difference between the wars of words between Karunanidhi, Jayalalithaa and Ramadoss?

Answer: Karunanidhi is able to fend off criticism from Jayalalithaa by recalling instances of wrongdoing during her tenure in power. Ramadoss has so far not ruled Tamil Nadu. So, Karunanidhi is at a loss to find fault with him.

S Murali , Kurinjippadi

Question: All old political parties are abominations, says Vijayakant. Is he correct?

Answer: When Sarat Kumar begins his party, Vijayakant's party too will become old!

S Venkat Narayanan, Srivaikuntam

Question: Karunanidhi's sojourn to Karnataka was an endeavour to get the Sun cartel to fork out the money due to him, says Jayalalithaa. Comment

Answer: Nobody could have understood Karunanidhi better than Jayalalithaa. On that ground, one cannot simply ignore her allegation.

VP Maharasi, Valliyoor

Question: Nehru was a simpleton and hence could be fooled by the Chinese, CIA documents have now revealed. Comment

Answer: The whole world knew that Nehru had a child-like fascination for China. This led to his depression [following the Indo-Chinese war]. One doesn't need the CIA to expose this open secret.

K Vediyappan, Gummidipoondi

Question: Can one deem the arrest of the elusive Naxalite leader Sundaramurthy as a success of the DMK regime?

Answer: This arrest is indeed praiseworthy.

KGS Govindan, Krishnapuram

Question: "Let us take up the spreading of Buddha's teachings as a challenge," Karunanidhi was quoted as saying on the conclusion of the 2500th anniversary celebrations of the religious leader's Nirvana. Comment

Answer: The Karma theory, its manifestations in different births, its being the cause of a good life or otherwise in peoples' lives, Nirvana's being the ultimate state of the soul after being emancipated from births and deaths…all such truths being mouthed by a rationalist is the surest sign of a challenge! Attempts to placate every audience by saying something acceptable to it will land the CM in verbal contortion.

S Rajni Priyan, Kalambur

Question: Can the DMK afford to chuck the PMK out of its [DPA] fold?

Answer: Though there are many who say that this possibility is impossible, thanks to the unending carping criticism from Ramadoss, Karunanidhi may not be averse to the idea of the PMK opting out of the DPA on its own. But, in my opinion, if the war of words do not cease and become unbearable, Karunanidhi may choose to chase the PMK away from its fold.
