Question: "Kalaignar isn't just one among thousands, rather, he is unique in the entire world," says Dr Ramadoss. Comment.
Answer: When the doctor sings hosannas hailing the CM, it means that a stinging critique is due shortly.

Question: What does the elevation of 22 persons with criminal backgrounds into the UP Cabinet go to show?
Answer: Firstly, all those who expected a government with a change in UP have been greatly disappointed. Secondly, corruption will flourish as will "jungle Raj." Finally all those who have imposed their faith in Mayawati will be in for a shock when dissidence rears its ugly head.

Question: Do you think that the Mayawati formula will be copied successfully at the centre and other states since she has achieved a thumping win in UP?
Answer: Doubtlessly there will those who might try. But, I have my reservations about such attempts because neither the political conditions in UP, nor its demography can be duplicated elsewhere.

Question: What is your take on Dr Ramadoss's recommendations that [a] all students up to class X should be declared as passed and [b] all schools and colleges ought to be declared closed during the months of May and June?
Answer: His first idea is a brilliant one to the effect that will bring down the standard of education in Tamil Nadu further. There is nothing wrong with the second one. It is a very good suggestion.

Question: PMK activists have threatened to launch an agitation demanding that cement be sold through fair price shops. Comment.
Answer: Those who buy cement and essential commodities are totally different sets of people. Apart from soiling stocked food grains the only other 'good effect' from this practice will be augmenting the 'earning capacity' of those manning fair price shops.

Question: The Supreme Court has said that criminal proceedings ought to be initiated against all those indulge in "ragging." Comment.
Answer: "Ragging" is a reprehensible practice and ought to be nipped in the bud. Courts have been expressing themselves strongly on this subject from time to time and these advocacies are forgotten after the lapse of a few months. I only hope that the Supreme Court's fiat doesn't suffer the same fate.

Question: How do you view the functioning of President APJ Abdul Kalam for the past five years?
Answer: Kalam blundered in the beginning – his midnight order dismiss a state government from Moscow is an example. He improved with the passage of time. For instance he refused to give his assent to the bill concerning office of profit. At this stage, the [Electoral College] is more or less certain to elect somebody else. To some extent that is a disappointment.

Question: "I will soon become the ringmaster controlling the [government at the] centre," says Mayawati. Comment.

Question: Aren't you surprised about [Prime Minister] Manmohan Singh and Leader of Opposition LK Advani have jointly backed the moves to create reservations for those who are economically backward in every caste?
Answer: The bigger surprise is that Mayawati too has expressed support to this plan.
But, I must point out that the late MGR had done the same thing long ago, despite the fact that he had to soon jettison the move. The very fact that he made such an attempt was a big achievement in itself. Now, the same issue has been resurrected. Though it may not yield quick results, it is a very healthy thought, all the same.

Question: Do you think that the attempt by the DMK to start its own television channel will affect the prospects of Sun TV?
Answer: There is a possibility of a fall in advertisement revenue which may in turn result in the early closure of certain programmes. But, apart from this minor aberration, there may not be any big fallout.

Question: Mayawati's victory in UP elections is a triumph of oppressed classes and social justice, says Dr Ramadoss. Comment.
Answer: Several "forward" caste candidates were given election tickets and included in her cabinet. Besides, Mayawati has begun talking about reservations based on the criterion of economic backwardness. In my opinion, Mayawati's achievement in UP and the "social justice" espoused by Dr Ramadoss are like cheese and chalk.

Question: Why do you think that the Dravidian parties which have accepted the existence of Ravana – [the villain] of Ramayana as one of their own – are insisting on saying that the Ram Sethu is a myth?
Answer: According to the "rational" Ramayana – Ravana is real while Rama is a myth. If someone were to call the bridge linking [Rameshwaram] and Sri Lanka as the "Ravana Sethu," who knows, it might be accepted as a "rational reality!"

Question: Apart from the casualties of the bomb that went off in the Mecca mosque in Hyderabad, five persons have been killed in police firing. Comment.

Question: "Ram did not help the BJP [even on the] Ayodhya issue," avers Dr Ramadoss. Comment.
Answer: He has a point. [Lord] Ram always tests those who consider themselves close to him. Aren't the travails of Sita enough proof?
N Raj Kumar, Chennai 96
Question: What is your take on the recent Sikh unrest in Punjab?
Answer: "Baba" Gurmeeth Singh Ram Rahim erred when he dressed up like the [last] Sikh guru – Guru Gobind Singh. But, by making an issue of it – even after the man in question has apologised – the Akalis are compounding the error.
A Yazhini Parvatham, Chennai 112
Question: Now that Mayawati is firmly ensconced in UP, what will happen to the Taj Corridor case?
Answer: It all depends as to how badly the Congress needs her help in vital issues. The ensuing Presidential elections will be the first litmus test.

Question: "Rahul Gandhi has all the qualifications to be our Prime Minister in the future," says Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi. Comment.
Answer: Perhaps Singhvi is scared that some Congressmen might want Rahul to immediately take over as the PM. Hence he has added the caveat "in the future."
R Prakash, Ponmalai
