Q & A by Cho Ramaswamy

Question: What is your take on the recent repeal of the law enacted by the earlier Jayalalithaa regime according to which political parties and caste-based bodies had to pay for the public property destroyed by their cadres during demonstrations?

Answer: Every time political or caste-based outfits organise demonstrations or rallies, unconnected antisocial elements use the opportunity to indulge in acts of arson. Therefore it would be wrong to demand some sort of compensation from them for wanton destruction of public property during their agitations. On that count, repealing the law in this regard isn't wrong.

But, at the same time, when the fixing of the responsibility of such acts of specific unruly behaviour on political parties or caste-based bodies becomes possible, the concerned parties ought to be penalised for them. Rendering this into an impossible task isn't a good sign.

Shobhana Dasan, Nattarasankottai

Question: If the Kumaraswamy regime is toppled in Karnataka by the BJP, the Congress will [save it] by its support, the party has announced. Comment.

Answer: Other parties wait till the toppling becomes  a reality to announce such intentions.
The Congress has done it long before the event.

JA Paranjothi, Elavampatti

Question: Is Karunanidhi a supporter or an enemy of the Tamil Tiger rebels?

Answer: So far as he believes that the terrorist outfit will emerge victorious from the war, he will continue to support it.

K Rajendran, Tiruchi 6

Question: Kindly make your personal opinion about the golden jubilee celebrations to mark Karunanidhi's 50 years as a legislator.

Answer: It is obvious that he hasn't completed 50 years as a legislator since he was absent for long interregnums during the said period. So the pompous event was organised much before it became due.

N Kuppuswamy, Coimbatore 14

Question: The incidence of spurious liquor couldn't be stopped even during the Kamaraj regime, avers Karunanidhi. Comment.

Answer: During the Kamaraj regime, be it moonshine or the DMK – both were small entities.

S Purushottama Rajan, Paramakudi

Question: Don't you think that Jayalalithaa's criticism of the LTTE despite having Vaiko for a political ally is a contradiction?

Answer: That is indeed true. Her failure to question Vaiko's continued support for the LTTE is weakening her stand against the terrorists.

VM Syed Bukhari, Athiramapattinam

Question: I think that Vijay Kant is a very decent politician under today's circumstances. Am I correct?

Answer: If one were to go by statements and speeches, [Dr] Ramadoss and Vaiko too should figure in this category of politicians.

M Serfuddin, Paramakudi

Question: "We will demand the centre's cooperation to oust Reliance from retail trade [in Tamil Nadu]," Chief Minister Karunanidhi has been quoted as saying on the floors of the legislative assembly. Is he right or wrong?

Answer: I have already said that this is a retrograde step. [In my opinion] this is yet another move of Karunanidhi to prevent Dr Ramadoss from claiming credit for "saving the small trader." And he has asked the centre's assistance in the matter – which I am sure won't be forthcoming. [It is fairly obvious] that Karunanidhi will attempt to shift the blame for the failure of this move onto the centre in future and charge the present coalition with non-cooperation.

When that happens, Dr Ramadoss will want to know as to why the CM did not threaten to pull out of the union government on this issue. These are common hazards faced by a weak politician whose only aim is to stay in power.

J Tariq Mohiuddin, Keezhcharakkalvilai

Question: Why is BJP leader L Ganeshan not simply saying, "in the light of Vaiko's continued support for the LTTE, the law ought to do its duty," and be done with it?

Answer: Perhaps Ganeshan has forgotten his averment that moral support accorded to the Tamil Tiger rebels by Vaiko wasn't punishable under law, while trying to save the MDMK leader from the clutches of Jayalalithaa and POTA. Had the BJP leader taken a correct stand in the matter then, perhaps one wouldn't be encountering the open backing of the terrorist outfit in Tamil Nadu.

K Rajendran, Tiruchi 6

Question: What is your reaction to the life sentence pronounced against Shahabuddin, an MP belonging to Laloo Prasad Yadav's party on charges of kidnapping and killing a communist worker?

Answer: One can heave a sigh of relief over the fact that the sentencing has come during a non-BJP reign. Else, without bothering about legal niceties, the government would have been accused of the sacrilege of imprisoning an MP belonging to a minority community!

M Seth, Natham

Question: The BJP is raising the Ram Sethu issue just as it did in the case of the Ayodhya temple tangle in the past, says CPM leader Sitaram Yechuri. Comment.

Answer: Excellent. Now, one can come to the conclusion that Ram Sethu is as real as the temple in Ayodhya.

KN Balakrishnan, Kumbhakonam 1

Question: The common public will not be benefited if the same ruling political arrangement exists at the centre as well as the state, says Jayalalithaa. Comment.

Answer: One cannot say so with such sweeping a generalisation. Everything depends on the nature of governments that exist at the centre and the state. They can do well as well as be a curse to the states. In the case of Tamil Nadu [at present], it is the latter.

P Ponrajapandi, Arasaradi

Question: What is your take on Karunanidhi's statement that communal north Indians are attempting to hinder the progress of the Sethu Samudram Shipping Canal Project?

Answer: There are no religious connotations to the demand concerning the safeguard of an ancient national symbol. Since Kalaingar has the habit of linking newspapers with [the Brahmins'] holy thread, his equating a national symbol with communalism doesn't surprise me.

Kollam S Krishnamurthy, Navi Mumbai 706

Question: "Even while one admits that religious beliefs are good to all, should they be pursued during net practice sessions?" This was a comment said to have emanated from the murdered Pakistani cricket coach Bob Woolmer, which is doing its rounds in the sporting fraternity. Comment.

Answer: There is nothing to be surprised about this development. I am appending a Q & A excerpt from the Thuglak dated April 11 this year.

Question: The current worse off status of Pakistani cricket is due to the interference of President [Pervez] Musharraf, says former cricketer Imran Khan. Comment.

Answer: Though this kind of talk has gained currency recently, one might soon hear that over dependence on Islamic tenets were responsible for the fall in standards of Pakistani cricket.
