Question: "Most political parties do not wish to call for a 'Bandh' and waste a whole day," says Karunanidhi. Comment.

Answer: A "Bandh" has no known productive uses. This game of one-upmanship of political parties only results in annoying people and increases antagonistic tendencies. Therefore, if what the CM says is true, it is a welcome development.

Question: Do you think that the government of India is correct in maintaining a silence for 17 days on the issue of the arms broker Quattrocchi's arrest in Argentina and finally attempting to bring him to book?

Answer: The issue doesn't end with the silence about Quattrocchi's arrest. The government of India hid the facts of his case when it came up before the courts here. Further, the government has helped in unfreezing his bank accounts [in UK]. It is difficult to visualize this government doing its best to bring him back to India to face prosecution. A news item has already appeared that the statement of the government of India claiming that we do not have an extradition treaty with Argentina is incorrect.
I won't be surprised if the whole thing ends up a farce as a result of a comedy of errors.

Mallika Anbazhagan, Chennai 114

Question: For just an argument's sake, what will happen if all the states demand autonomy?

Answer: If that happens, t he USA, China, Russia, oil exporting nations, et al will develop commercial interests all over the country and convert the nation into a plethora of vassal states with the use of pelf. This in turn will result in many of our states becoming "associates" of foreign powers. The differences existing here due to the existence of multifarious languages will develop into huge chasms. The silent wars of foreign countries will morph into running battles here. Corruption will grow manifold. After paying such a huge price, nothing useful will come of it.

A Abdul Kader, Vilathikulam

Question: What is your take on Dayanidhi Maran's comment that Tamil Nadu can only be proud of President Abdul Kalam and Chief Minister Karunanidhi?

Answer: Probably Maran has added Kalam's name as an aside.

Question: Can you give a political explanation to astrology, prophesy and the "Prasnam" system [of predicting the future which has its origins in Kerala]?

Answer: Astrology is based on horoscopes. Prophesies are based on instincts. "Prasnam" is a system that predicts the future by the casting of a horoscope for the span of time when relevant questions are asked. When it comes to politics, opinion polls are propagated without any basis whatsoever.

S Purushottama Rajan, Paramakkudi

Question: "Nobody should dream of the prospect of Tamil Nadu intervening in the Lankan Tamils issue by ignoring the centre's efforts in this regard," says Karunanidhi. Comment.

Answer:
If this rhetoric is translated into action, it would be welcome. But, when one remembers that a pro-LTTE activist continues to hold an important post in a state government aided institution, naturally, doubts arise about the seriousness of the government's hands-off intentions.

P Devi, Papanasam

Question:
[TNCC president] Krishnaswamy claims that he will be able to end factional fights in his party within the next two months. Comment.

Answer:
I don't think that it will translate into reality because the Congress high command will never think of disbanding the state unit of the party.

H Tamilarasan, Mumbai 17

Question: What do you think about Karunanidhi's inviting those who have been thrown out of the MDMK for an all party meeting?

Answer: This reminds me of a scene in the English movie Becket. The ruler of England sends his ambassadors to the French monarch on an important mission. A tailor has just finished measuring the king for a new set of clothes. "Ask the Englishmen to come. We will respond to them along with the tailor. Let them understand their position in France," says the French king. Matters of international importance are discussed by him with the English diplomats even as he makes small talk with his tailor.

In the context of Tamil Nadu, the MDMK dissidents have served the same purpose as the French tailor. The importance accorded wasn't really meant for them, it was just a ruse to slight Vaiko.

Vetri Selvan, Coimbatore 1

Question: The joint probe offer from Pakistan to investigate the Samjhauta Express bomb blast has been turned down by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh. Comment.

Answer:
The Prime Minister is right in doing so. There are enough pointers indicating that Pakistan wants the real culprits to escape. The Pakistani government transported all its citizens injured in the incident, in a hasty manner back home. There cannot be any other motive behind this but for the sole aim that India shouldn't be able to glean any information from the injured.

Padmini Balaraman, Coimbatore 38

Question: "The wise save, [but] the wiser borrow," says Finance Minister P Chidambaram. Comment.

Answer: The wisest don't repay their borrowings!

KN Balakrishnan, Kumbhakonam 1

Question: In the present context of increasing terrorism, with which country should we have closer relations?

Answer: I have said this before. In this matter, our best allies are the US and Israel.

PS Manivannan, Tirupur 4

Question: What will be the natural progression of PMK's opposition to Reliance?

Answer: It will fizzle out.

K Sampath, Thirukkazhukkunram

Question: Do you think that a change of guard is necessary in Tamil Nadu?

Answer: If the government's approaches to several [vital] issues don't change, the change you refer to might become a necessity.

R Vanumamalai Perumal, Petharangapuram

Question: What is the Prime Minister's biggest [and current] headache?

Answer:
Sonia Gandhi. Since she also happens to be the head, there is no cure.
